August 7, 1936 – August 6, 2025

John (Jack) Anthony Vogel died peacefully at home, at the age of 88, on August 06, 2025, after a long and prosperous life. His family was at his side, making sure he was as peaceful as could be.

Jack was born in Butte, Montana on 8/7/1936, to John and Mercedes Vogel. Jack earned a BA degree from the University of Montana in 1958, and then served in the U.S. Army for 2 years. While attending the University of Montana, he met his future wife, Sharon Dolum. They were married on 12/26/1959 in Missoula, Montana and were married for 55 years until Sharon passed away in January of 2015.

He began his career as a teacher in Kentucky in 1959. After 1 year in Kentucky, Jack and Sharon decided to move back to Missoula. In October of 1960, Jack and Sharon welcomed their daughter, LeeAnn. In 1962, Jack received a job offer for a teaching position in Portland, Oregon, and that is where he spent the rest of his life. In Oregon, Jack and Sharon welcomed two more sons, Timothy (1963-1963) and Greg (1964-).

After teaching, Jack became a dedicated employee of Pacific Power and Light, where he served as a Mediator, Labor Relations Negotiator, Director of Public Relations, and friend to all.

Once retired, Jack and Sharon moved to Summerfield in 2003 and became an integral part of the Summerfield community. He served as chair of the Summerfield board and met longtime friends along the way. Faith was a big part of his life, and he dedicated much time to St. Anthony’s church, where he volunteered as an usher. One of Jack’s favorite things to do was golf, and he showed his skills throughout his retirement at Summerfield, actively participating in golf groups and even scoring a hole-in-one in 2021.

The other role Jack served until his last day was being a father and grandfather. Jack, also known as “Papa” to his grandkids, loved and prioritized his family in every way. He always hosted holidays, and in the more recent years, learned how to cook a fantastic meal. Having him close by to both his kids and grandkids allowed for time we are all thankful for with our beloved Papa.

Jack is survived by his significant other, Susan; sons, Timothy (deceased) and Gregory Vogel, and daughter-in-law, Hanna Vogel; daughter, Lee Ann Rutledge; grandchildren, Samuel, McKenna, Madeline, Angela, and Daniel; and great-grandson, Malakai.

Many thanks to all of Jack’s wonderful caregivers and Legacy Hospice services for the love and care you showed us all.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2025, at St. Anthony’s church in Tigard, followed by a reception. Any and all who knew and loved Jack are welcome. 9905 SW McKenzie St, Tigard, OR 97223
