Inchworm Tutoring provides individualized K-12 reading and spelling lessons designed to fill learning gaps, teach tools for further learning, and elevate confidence.

The owner, Lindsay Skinner, developed a passion for reading and spelling-based tutoring from her own early education experience, “I couldn’t read until I was 8. I felt frustrated, behind, and lost. I teach to help those that feel the way I did.”

The name Inchworm Tutoring comes from the belief that learning should reflect the wave-like body of an inchworm. There will be upward progressions, moments of review, and spikes in learning as students inch closer to becoming savvy readers and spellers.

Lindsay cultivates positive and fun lessons that are set up to decrease the anxiety that can come with learning. The students move at a pace that is adjusted from lesson to lesson based on what the student needs, “I get to know my students. I learn their interests, and I incorporate what they love into their lessons.”

Lindsay has assisted neurodivergent students, dyslexic students, and those who just need a little additional support. She has worked with children in both schools and through tutoring companies.

Her experience has taught her the encouraging effect that one-on-one lessons can have. “With the lesson focused on the student, they get a clearer perspective of their achievements. The best part is they start to have fun, and in doing so, learn to enjoy learning.”

Lessons are an hour long and are available in person and virtually. They are structured around building off familiar concepts to revisit and solidify while incorporating new concepts.

When a student starts tutoring, Lindsay records and analyzes the concepts the student knows. She then curates a learning plan that incorporates what the student knows and what is most prevalent for them to learn.

Lindsay strives to provide open communication with her students and parents. “I regularly have discussions with my students about what concepts they learn, what they find helpful, what they want to work on, and what they find difficult. I provide thorough notes to their parents/guardians about their child’s progress and lessons. I encourage the parents to ask questions and provide them with tips and tricks for assisting their child with learning at home.”
