2023 Home Remodeling Trends:
Color Is In
Move over grey and white; color is on the rise.
“Rather than creating an all-white kitchen, there is a trend toward blue and green painted cabinets as well as warm tone-stained cabinets,” says Vicki Enger, designer with Mountainwood Homes, a Tigard-based design/build company.
If you’re not into the bold look, add a wood island or paint it a different color to add warmth and contrast. Rift-cut white oak and walnut are still popular.
“If I see a color theme throughout a client’s home, I will suggest incorporating it into the design,” adds Designer Sarah Peek with Mountainwood Homes. “I mention, ‘It seems like you really like green…’ and that gives them permission to have color confidence instead of staying safe.”
There are other, less permanent ways to incorporate color into your home.
“Adding colorful throw pillows, blankets, or area rugs is an easy way to add subtle color changes throughout your home,” said Jantzen Shelton, design coordinator at Mountainwood Homes.
Start with Main Floor Updates
It’s typical to start with a kitchen remodel and update the main floor before heading upstairs to the primary bathroom since these are the most used and seen areas. Once homeowners commit to a kitchen remodel, they usually want to carry out the upgrades in the adjoining spaces. New paint, millwork, and flooring can create a cohesive look from room to room.
“We often select Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring or sand and refinish the existing hardwoods,” Peek added. “You don’t have to rip out all the flooring when you do a remodel; lacing in new hardwoods and adding a contemporary wood stain can make a big difference. Installing taller baseboards can also elevate a builder-grade home to give a more contemporary and stylish look.”
Other standard main-floor upgrades include renovating the entry staircase and refreshing the fireplace with built-in cabinets and a media center to create dramatic focal points.
Layer Textures
A shift toward minimal and simple layouts with unique shapes and textures has become more common. Layering various textures like wood, stone, metal finishes, wallpaper, rattan, and fabrics create an elevated look.
More Organized Cabinets & Pantry
Creating better storage solutions is one of the main reasons to remodel a kitchen or bathroom. In the kitchen, common cabinetry upgrades include a trash and recycling pullout, large drawers, corner cabinet optimizers, and spice pullouts.
Recently, homeowners have been focusing on maximizing their pantries or adding a butler’s pantry if space allows. Common upgrades include:
- Elevating the space from wire shelving to cabinetry
- Designing the space to store small appliances
- Creating more space for inventory
- Adding electrical outlets for small appliances
Spa Bathroom at Home
Creating a luxurious and relaxing bathing experience at home is a popular bathroom trend.
“Since everyone’s gym closed during the pandemic, people stayed home to work out,” Peek mentions. “Homeowners want those amenities that would be found in a commercial space and say, ‘I want that in my house – I don’t want to leave!’”
A more oversized shower tops the wish list for many homeowners planning a bathroom remodel.
Steam showers, body sprays, and technology controls have been popular. Homeowners want all the bells and whistles as they prioritize wellness and create a spa experience at home.
Homeowners are looking for more customized storage space in the bathroom, such as a hair tool pullout with integrated electrical.
