Winter in Oregon can be beautiful, but it also comes with its own set of challenges and risks. From icy roads to power outages, being prepared is essential to staying safe and protecting your loved ones. The Tigard Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is here to help you navigate the season with confidence.

Preparing Your Home

1. Stock Emergency Supplies: Ensure you have essentials such as:

  • Non-perishable food and water (enough for at least three days).
  • Flashlights, batteries, and candles.
  • A first aid kit including prescription medications.
  • Extra blankets and warm clothing.

2. Inspect Your Heating System: Have your furnace or alternative heating sources evaluated.

3. Prevent Frozen Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes and faucets and let faucets drip slightly if needed when the temperature gets below freezing..

4. Create a Power Outage Plan: Have a backup heat source and charge devices in advance.

Winterizing Your Vehicle

  • Check Tires: Ensure they are properly inflated and have adequate tread for icy conditions.
  • Carry an Emergency Kit: Include items like blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables, and a small shovel.
  • Keep Your Gas Tank Full: This prevents fuel lines from freezing.
  • Plan for Delays: Allow extra travel time and check road conditions before leaving.

Staying Safe Outdoors

  • Dress in layers to retain body heat and stay dry.
  • Avoid walking on icy surfaces if possible; wear traction aids for added safety.
  • Keep pets indoors or provide adequate shelter and warmth.

Helping Your Community

  • Check on neighbors, especially those who are elderly or have limited mobility.
  • Clear sidewalks of snow and ice to ensure accessibility for all.
  • Volunteer with local organizations like CERT to assist during emergencies.
