The Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the winners of the 2025 Tigard Civics Bee, held for the first time in Tigard on March 8 at Twality Middle School. This exciting competition brought together bright young minds from across the region to test their knowledge of civics, government, and the democratic process. The Emcee for the event was Representative and House Majority Leader Ben Bowman, and the judging panel included Tigard Mayor Heidi Lueb, Nina Carlson of NW Natural, and Becky Tymchuk Board Chair of the NW Regional Education Service District.

After an engaging and competitive event, the following students emerged as this year’s top civics scholars and winners of the bee and cash prizes:

  • First Place: Yervant Wei of Riverdale Grade School
  • Second Place: Emeryn Tibbs of Riverdale Grade School
  • Third Place: Athanasia Gatziolis of Riverdale Grade School

Rounding out the top five students who will head to the State Civics Bee are Alexis Milla of Riverdale Grade School and Avery Neice of Lake Oswego Middle School.

The Civics Bee is part of a National initiative designed to inspire middle school students to become active and informed citizens. Participants answered questions on topics ranging from the U.S. Constitution and the three branches of government to local governance and civic engagement.

“We were thrilled to see so many students passionate about civics and the role they play in shaping their communities,” said Megan De Salvo, CEO of the Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce. “Their enthusiasm and knowledge are inspiring, and we hope this experience encourages them to stay engaged in local civics for life.”

The winners will go on to represent the Portland Metro area at the State Civics Bee competition, showcasing their skills on a larger stage.
