David Auburn’s “Proof” – the winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama – is the upcoming January offering in the popular and provocative “UnMasked” series produced by Mask & Mirror Community Theatre. The thought-provoking show, directed by Tony Broom, will run from January 20 through February 5 at the Tualatin Heritage Center, 8700 SW Sweek Drive, Tualatin. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

An enigmatic young woman, her manipulative sister, their brilliant father, and an unexpected suitor are all puzzle pieces muddling a search for the truth behind a mysterious mathematical proof. In “Proof” the young, guarded Catherine grieves the loss of her famous mathematician father, legendary at the local university for solving complicated proofs. Fearing his dementia is hereditary, Catherine has her world further upended by her older sister’s return to “settle family affairs” and the appearance of her father’s former student who discovers a notebook containing a long-buried family secret. This poignant drama about love and reconciliation unfolds on the back porch of a simple, elegant home settled in a suburban university town.

The cast features Amelia Michaels as Catherine, Greg Prosser as her father Robert, Katie Souza as her sister Claire, and Jason Paris as the former student Hal.

Having successfully directed “The Receptionist” for the UnMasked series in 2018, director Broom returns with enthusiasm for what he describes as “one of the best scripts that I’ve ever read.  Lucky to produce this show about ten years ago, now I’m fortunate to direct it. The script has a little bit of everything; family drama, romance, mystery, even a few laughs. An abundance of really talented people auditioned, and I’m really enjoying working with this cast. Reconnecting with old friends and making new ones is always enjoyable. A couple of the actors have described their parts as ‘bucket-list’ roles.  Come see the show and guess which ones!”
