Annual “Get Ready for Nesting Season” event coming to Tualatin Heritage Center

It may still be mid-winter, but bird nesting season is closer than you think. For the Prescott Bluebird Recovery Project (PBRP), now is the time to prepare.

The PBRP is a non-profit conservation organization comprised of over 50 “citizen scientists” dedicated to the recovery and restoration of the Western Bluebird. The group relies on volunteers to monitor nesting activities in bird boxes placed throughout the northern Willamette Valley, including Newberg, Dundee, Sherwood, Wilsonville, Oregon City, Canby, and Scholls.

These boxes are vital for the species’ survival. The Western Bluebird is currently listed as a “sensitive species” by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife due to the loss of natural nesting cavities, habitat reduction, and competition from invasive species like the House Sparrow.

Become a Citizen Scientist

PBRP is currently looking for monitors to visit assigned routes of boxes weekly from early April through the end of August. Because bluebird pairs often have two clutches a year, consistent monitoring is key. Volunteers record data on nests, eggs, and hatchlings, which is then consolidated and shared with scientific organizations to track the species’ health.

No prior experience is necessary. The PBRP provides experienced leaders to conduct field training and answer questions throughout the season.

Mental Health Benefits

Volunteering isn’t just good for the birds—it’s good for you, too. Recent studies have found that seeing and hearing birds can improve mental well-being for up to eight hours. Coupling this with the opportunity to step away from the urban hustle makes volunteering a true win-win.

Attend the Spring Meeting

As volunteers retire or relocate, new routes open up every year. To kick off the season, PBRP is holding its annual informational meeting for anyone interested in volunteering or simply learning more about these beautiful birds.

So come and check us out! This year we will be hosting a meeting for anyone interested in volunteering or just learning more about Bluebirds. This meeting will inform you about bluebirds, bluebird boxes and how we monitor. This Spring meeting will be on Saturday February 28  from 9:30 am till 11:30 at the Heritage Center in Tualatin. There will be time after the presentation to visit and ask questions. Parking is free and so is the meeting.
