Are you planning on getting a holiday gift for your pets this year? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, 80 percent of pet owners plan to buy gifts for their pets this holiday season, according to a new survey of 2,000 U.S. dog and cat owners.

According to the survey, 68 percent of pet owners plan to purchase multiple gifts for their pets, with 51 percent getting toys and about 30 percent bringing treats as gifts.

So, what’s popular in toys and treats for pets this year? There aren’t a lot of new products, but rather a decent amount of well-designed toys and wholesome treats that prove to be longterm favorites, including:

  • Durable, made in the U.S. toys for chewing: Planet Dog, West Paw Design, Ruffwear and WO Dog Toys continue to produce some of the best, non-toxic, durable toys around
  • Toys and products to keep your inquisitive pets busy: Puzzle toys by Kong, JW Pet, Planet Dog, SmartCat, Starmark and SlimCat are some favorites in our stores
  • The trend towards more natural products continues to increase. Wholesome chews, training treats and freeze-dried food toppers are big requests by pet owners, and there is no shortage of companies out there to get them from. To be safe, read labels or ask your store clerk to make sure there aren’t any artificial ingredients such as colors, flavors or preservatives and that the products are free of irradiation. Some of our favorites include Open Farm, Plato, Cat-Man-Doo, Wild Meadow Farms, Farm Hounds, Smallbatch, K9 & Feline Naturals, Chasing our Tails and PolkaDog

Want to find something local? We have a handful of Oregon-based companies that make great products to give as gifts! Check out Snook’s Sweet Potato Chews, so dry and crunchy and yet so sweet that most dogs find them irresistible. And Uncle Larry’s packaged freeze-dried chicken, beef and lamb treats. One ingredient and packed full of protein, dogs and cats go crazy for these. Eugene-based Haven Hearts, (vegan dog treats) donates 100% of their profits to rescued animals in need. Of course, no list is complete without Ruffwear. Although their products are not made in the U.S., they are headquartered in Bend and make quality products for the dog adventurer. Coats, backpacks, booties and toys, Ruffwear is one of the most sought after dog gear companies by active pet owners across the U.S.
