Fun is dead center, and Archer’s Afield hits the bullseye with a host of offerings targeted at making a day (or night) of classic recreational archery.
Tigard’s longtime archery center has packed the schedule with a full slate of themed, affordable evenings aimed at offering up a good time any night of the week.
“We have fun every day,” says owner Jim Kneeland. “I want to tell people to get down here. Have some fun.”
Kneeland, who opened the archery range and retail store more than three decades ago, has slowly expanded the store’s offerings and its footprint to a multiple suite set up and nightly themed events where archers of all levels can have a good time.
Date night sharpshooters are rewarded with Hershey’s kisses for meeting the mark.
“Couples come in, and they’re shooting together, playing games, and they’re always laughing. We have different challenges and things. We give out awards if they shoot a good shot. They get kisses on date night,” Robert Kneeland, who runs the shop with his dad, said.
Escape room players face a series of timed challenges to work their way out of the room, and many return again and again, trying to work their way up the leaderboard. Birthday party guests aim to pop balloons. The fun turns funky on Cosmic Night with disco balls, lights, music, and glowing targets.
The great thing about the sport is it’s easy to learn, easy on the wallet, and equally accessible to the whole family. A day of shooting, including equipment and a quick lesson for newcomers, is just $25.
“The kids like it because it’s quick to learn,” Robert said. “Anyone can do it. If you spend 20 minutes, you’ll be nailing your target.”
After the shop and ranges close, the special events and archery leagues begin.
“For kids and parents and adults, it’s good common ground. It’s something that they can enjoy doing together,” Jim said. “It’s not like other sports where you’ve got to spend an arm and a leg doing it.”
A basic recurve bow – think Robin Hood and Katniss Everdeen – starts at $125. Throw in the arrows, and a new archer can walk out with everything they need for under $200.
“The big focus I have is recreational archery,” Jim said. “I want families. I want people looking for an inexpensive pure sport they can do together, learn quickly, and enjoy.”
